Cheap Homemade Laundry Soap

So I found this recipe on a few different sites and thought I would try it out. It's supposed to be safe for HE washers and so far it hasn't messed mine up :-) The difference is that you use just 1/4 cup per load for the HE and 1/2 cup per normal washer load.

Instead of just giving you the recipe I'll give credit to the site that I actually used the recipe from The Family Homestead. The only thing I did different from the recipe was that I put in 2/3 of a bar of the Fels Naptha soap. I grated it with my food processor.

I was actually shocked at how simple this recipe was to make. She also has a break down of how much the soap costs to make. A whopping .71 for about 2 gallons. That works out to be .01 cent per load. But I think that's a normal load so it's half that for an HE washer! Gotta love it!

I've wanted to try this- where did you get the supplies? can you add fragrance like with essential oils?

This is exactly what I use, too! To Kelly: I've never tried to add fragrance so I don't know how that would work.

My one problem has been stain removal. I finally broke down and bought some oxi-clean spray because the homemade treatments I read about just didn't cut it. Perhaps if I automatically treated every stain the day or moment they happen, I wouldn't have to use commercial stain removers, but I don't. And for now, I've accepted that.

All that said, I love the laundry soap and it is a money saver! Now I can't stand the artifical smell of laundry soap. We make our own household cleaners, too. Vinegar is my new best friend!
