Some people have asked me to post more natural remedies that I use. Today I'm not going to talk about a remedy per se, but preventative action. The last few days we've had smoothies. I haven't really wanted them, because it's like wanting a hot chocolate on a warm summer day...Cold stuff just doesn't sound as scrumptious when it's negative temps out.
Anyhoo...We've had smoothies because it's actually been ABOVE freezing. We've got a freezer full of different fruits we use pear, banana, apple, apricots, strawberries, blackberries, whatever makes you go, mmmm. The kicker is that I add green stuff. We have a mixture that we spent way too much for, but it tastes good. It has Alfalfa, Barley, and Wheat grass powders, mixed with peppermint and stevia. I also add extra alfalfa, wheat grass, and barley powders in. We do about three heaping Tbsps of each, you might like to start with less. Then I just add enough water to get a nice consistency and Voila, a meal in minutes. At first I didn't add as much of the green powder because the kids didn't want it green, now they don't even seem to notice...
Normally, a smoothie doesn't stay with you long and you get hungry pretty soon...however, with the concentrated nutrition of the green powder, this keeps my kids (and me) going for quite awhile. The great thing is, if there are leftovers, you pop them into the popsicle forms and freeze them and you've got a completely natural and healthy treat that you don't have to feel bad about giving to your kids.
This is also how I can hide some of the nutrition (or medicinal herbs) that I want to give my younger kids that can't swallow capsules.
I've noticed these last few days, that I've had more energy, and have craved unhealthy food less, because I'm getting the concentrated nutrition from the green powder. That's really the way I've come to look at herbs in general...As concentrated nutrition. Herbs can help to heal so many things, not because they are magical in some way, but because they give your body the building blocks (vitamins, minerals, etc.) it needs to heal the problem...
I'm always reminding myself, it takes 10 times the normal amount of nutrition to heal something in your body as to maintain the status quo.
If you're interested in buying any of the green powders, Mountain Rose Herbs (there is a button on the right) is meticulous about the quality of product they have and most likely, will be much cheaper than a health food store. I buy all my herbs and spices (even culinary) because the quality is so great and I can get them so much cheaper.
Bon Appetit!
